I have just received a Launchpad from the good people at Novation and I am really enjoying it so far. I have already done a first impressions review comparing the Launchpad vs APC40 so I thought a tutorial might be more interesting. So in this episode I am going to cover the basics of how the different modes work. Comment if you want to see more Launchpad tutorials and I might dig in deeper!

Do you know how to set up something more like this in user 1? I know this is really indepth, but to setup the users into specific sounds rather than loops. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXLL46xkdlY

  • Dhiren Shah

Superb! Made things quite easy for now :)

  • Juli

no u need live 8, intro isn’t enough

  • ireallyknowwhatimtalkingabout

i know this seems trivial, but can i have a few questions about the launchpad. Can you do more with user2? can you put a drum rack and note thingy’s together in the same user 1 setting? how can you put your own samples into user 1? how long do you cook 2 minute noodles? if you already did a video can send me a link. thanks

  • RupertBrown

Sorry your right in Live Intro you can use racks you just cant edit or create them.

  • ireallyknowwhatimtalkingabout

then how did the australian artist M4sonic to use what seemed to be a custom drum rack

  • RupertBrown

Using automap you can make the pads do whatever you want. So you can make them trigger notes, which intern can trigger a drum rack.

You dont put samples into user1. Remember its just a controller nothing is stored on or specifically for the device its just controlling the software like a mouse & keyboard. (http://thedspproject.com/midi-controller-basics)

Because user1 sends notes the best way for it to trigger samples is to use a drum rack, as I said notes going into the drum rack will play the pads.

Noodles is not so straight forward some might say 2mins but I like them soft so I run them for 5mins and let them sit, this comes down to personal preference.

While I havent done a specific video on this if you watch all the launchpad tutorials you will get a better idea of how it works.

  • RupertBrown

What specifically are you struggling with?

  • ireallyknowwhatimtalkingabout

i’m having trouble making a drumrack from scratch. i have a lot of samples i want in a drum rack. but i don’t know how to make one.

  • RupertBrown

Do you have the full version of live?
If so drum racks will be in your devices menu, drag one into a midi channel then drag and drop the required samples on to the pads

  • ireallyknowwhatimtalkingabout

is there a way to assign a sound to a specific pad?

  • RupertBrown

I dont really understand the question. You dont need to assign anything when the user1 automatic plays the sounds loaded into the drum rack?

Unless you mean putting sounds into the drumrack? If you have full version of live you should just be able to drag in the sounds you want to use. Sorry if Im not understanding your question.

  • ireallyknowwhatimtalkingabout

its fine. although i feel like the only person on this website, i have launchpad edition of live. could you do a video about sampling from songs and putting them into drumracks. i feel as if this is bread and butter and i dont know how. my edition of live came with the launchpad. if it isnt a full version that would really piss me off. thanks

  • RupertBrown

Prepare to be pissed off. Launchpad edition is a lite version so I am afraid you dont have the ability to create or edit drumracks, only use them.

You can however get a simular-ish result by adding clips to session view and setting the quantizing under the clip launch options to none. The issue with this being clips in the same channel will cut each other off :-/

  • ireallyknowwhatimtalkingabout

F*&^ Piece of S8^^* up the Y8^^(*(*^&%& GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. thanks for all your help.

  • ireallyknowwhatimtalkingabout

i dare you to do a video about making noodles or a noodle cameo in a video. i dare you.

  • AlexM

What is the Program you have up? I literally just got my launchpad and i have no idea what the hell im doing with it. I just plugged it in and yea. im lost. What programs do i need and where can i find them.

  • Dedebenui

You get the launchpad edition of Ableton Live on a DVD in the box of the launchpad, it’s for Mac and PC and it’s exactly the same on Mac and PC I think.

  • Fabian

in the last part when u used user 1 the leds didn’t schine up yellow why aren’t they lighthing up??/?

  • RupertBrown

User 1 doesn’t light up by default, see my LED feedback video ( http://thedspproject.com/launchpad-led-feedback ) on how to set that up.

  • Tim

how do you use user 2 mode to control effects like a knob, you see it being done in the first video but there is no explanation.

okay this shit is complicated. im able to make lil beats and turn them into a clip. but im only able to make long 6 or w.e second loops. how do i program a clip to just be one beat so i can make a song… the only time i have access to play freely and make noise as i press pads is when im building a clip. but once its made i dont really have access to pay freely. all i can do is start loops./ i see many youtube vids of people pressing pads for a single beat . this shit is complicated. i thought id be able to chop and sample my fav tracks but dang it took me 20 mins just to get the thing lit up. so help please on basic steps in turning premade clips into acceable notes to press for live music. thanks.

How do u even get a syth option? where does that even come from. wtff ahhh

  • RupertBrown

Load a synth into live, then control it via user1 mode.

  • RupertBrown

when midi mapping in user 2 press and hold the first pad then press the second pad on the same horizontal row. The know is now mapped across those pads.

  • RupertBrown

You need to use the drum rack device. There are many tutorials on it just google it.

  • Candy

Im stuck with user 1 mode… how do u press a button in the mixer mode and ur user 1 just start workimg?

  • RupertBrown

You have a mixer and user 1 button, they aren’t working? Sorry I don’t quite understand your problem.

  • Dave Erving

I’ve been searching for a tutorial about mapping the Launchpad and the Korg NanoKontrol 2. I notice you have both of them and was hoping you could do a tutorial on this. I’ve seen a lot of videos where people use them together, but no one seems to do a tutorial on the subject. Love your tutorials, Thanks

  • RupertBrown

Hey Dave, they kind of work independently of each other so not sure what I would cover. Is there something in particular you need help with?

  • Dave Erving

It just seems like everytime I try to use them with Ableton, I’ll have one mapped out and then they start to interfere with each other, not working independently. I was wondering if I could maybe map them to act like the apc40(I’ve got them connected to a board, with the nano above the launchpad and then wired through a 2 to 1 usb adapter). Maybe, I’m just setting them up wrong. Thanks for the quick reply.

  • Dave Erving

So not to be confusing, the connection to the board is just for looks, it has nothing to do with the usb connections or setup. Thanks again

  • RupertBrown

You need to put one of them on a different midi channel. Open up the nano software and change the midi channel. It will prob be on 1 so just change it to 2. Then they wont interfere with each other.

  • http://www.daveerving.com/ Dave Erving

I think I tried that, but I’ll try it again. Do I do that in the Korg NanoKontrol software, and then save it as a new file?

  • RupertBrown

Yep change the midi channel on the NanoKontrol software and you should be good.

  • http://www.daveerving.com/ Dave Erving

Ok, I got the software changed, and I know this is a stupid question, but how do I get Ableton to recognize that software change, I’m looking everywhere, but can’t get Ableton to recognize my nano, it’s been a while, so it’s almost like starting over. I think I’m just gonna have to learn all over

  • RupertBrown

    Preferences > Midi

  • http://www.daveerving.com/ Dave Erving

I guess what I’m trying to figure out is, I went in and set up the software with midi channel 2, but Ableton Midi Script is written out, I found a folder with some script online(that I setup in the midi script file), but I don’t understand how the Korg Nano software is incorporated, and there doesn’t seem to be any tutorials on it. I hope I explained it right. Thanks again

  • http://www.daveerving.com/ Dave Erving

Thanks for all the help, but now my Nano isn’t even working so I’ll have to get a new one(it’s still under warranty) and get back to you. I wrote another reply, asking about the software and the Midi Script(which I tried, but the nano refuses to work), but I don’t see it anymore. Thanks again, love the tutorials

  • RupertBrown

I don’t understand why you would be messing with Midi scripts if you are just trying to get the two controllers to work without interfering with each other. You shouldn’t need Midi scripts this is an unnecessary layer of complexity.
Sorry to hear your unit has broken :-(

  • http://www.daveerving.com/ Dave Erving

Well, to be honest, I got into the scripts because Ableton wasn’t recognizing the controller, but after a little more messing with it, I realized it was the controller the whole time. Thanks for all the help

  • VLAD
